About the Course
The approach road to the links of County Louth Golf Club, better known as Baltray after the local fishing village, is especially uplifting. The course lies at the mouth of the River Boyne, and the combination of the estuary on one side and the Irish Sea on the other creates a uniquely sheltered yet exposed links environment. The original layout was built in 1892 and significantly reworked by Tom Simpson in 1938 — one of his lesser-known but finest achievements. The fairways are firm, the rough is penal, and the greens are among the most subtly contoured in Ireland. County Louth regularly hosts the East of Ireland Amateur Championship, one of the most prestigious events on the Irish amateur calendar, and has hosted Irish Opens on the professional circuit.
