About the Course
No other course has hosted more Opens than the Old Course at St Andrews. Golf was probably played here as early as the 12th century; what is certain is that the Old Course is one of the oldest golf courses in existence. In 1553 the Archbishop of St Andrews confirmed the community's right to play golf over the links, and in 1764 the course was reduced from 22 holes to 18, setting the standard for courses worldwide. The shared fairways, massive double greens, the Swilcan Bridge, the Road Hole — these are the defining images of the sport itself. Rarely ranked outside the world's top five, the Old Course rewards local knowledge and imagination above all else.
